I think I have quite succesfully lost my real accent (Devonshire, UK) and no longer sound like a country bumpkin!
I would say I am more an accent "chameleon", copying the accents of the people I spend most time around, which at the moment are Aussies!

Mon, May 30, 2005 - 2:29 PMI American terms I'd be described as a "hick" or "redneck"...my accent sounds dumb and way too rural. I cringe when I hear my folks talk.....shallow, I know (!) but way more pleasant for those around me LOL
