Irish v. Irish Dialect

In Match Point, Jonny Rhy-Meyers plays an Irish pro tennis player (huh!?), but he doesn't have the typical Irish accent. In an interview, when asked about it, he said, "It's Irish, but not an Irish dialect." So where does one pick up an Irish accent NOT from an Irish dialect? I mean, where in Ireland would the character be from?

Well it's like in most contries where people who come from middle or upper-class backgrounds. They seem to have less of the typical native accent. I don't know if he is from those social classes but I seen him in an interview and he is from Cork I think. People from Cork have a very stong and particular accent.
During my time I was trying to figure where he was from. I suspected he was Irish. Maybe he lived in the United State or Britain for a while.

Have you heard Callum Best's accent? It's like Nothern Irish with American and Enlgish
