It kinda seems a shame that this tribe is all about accents, but you can't hear them on here.

How about one of us guys posting a recording of ourselves each week, and open the way to some "hot or not", is-this-an-adorable-accent discussion? I guess it's too much for the lads to hope that the ladies'll be inflating our egos over this, but it could make for some amusing "wha' wa' tha'?" discussions.

I think I have a copy of my voicemail message in MP3 around here somewhere, but I was thinking along the lines of reading your favourite poem or a page or so from a novel, or something like that.

Ideally I think it'd be cool if submissions were posted anonymously [1] so that you're blind-judged just on your accent... no chance of your photo affecting the comments... and so that a bit of tension is created towards the end of the week when the speaker is revealed.

What do y'all think? And volunteers? Any suggestions? What kinda content would you like to hear for a 2 - 5 minute voice check?

In Match Point, Jonny Rhy-Meyers plays an Irish pro tennis player (huh!?), but he doesn't have the typical Irish accent. In an interview, when asked about it, he said, "It's Irish, but not an Irish dialect." So where does one pick up an Irish accent NOT from an Irish dialect? I mean, where in Ireland would the character be from?

How Heavy and How Real?

So how heavy does an accent have to be for it to count? And how foreign? How about a Canadian accent? I've lived my whole life in the States, but my mom was Canadian. I never thought she had an accent, but on rare occasions people could pick it out and would ask about it. I can think of three times in my whole life where someone's picked out and asked me about my "accent".

So yeah... uh... barely determineable Canadian accent... what do ya say ladies, pretty sexy, *EH?!*

Or how about if I just fake it? I can fake a pretty good French, German, English, Irish, or Scottish, and do a couple others pretty well. One night a friend of mine brought me out to some little gig to DJ with him, and we went the whole night convincing people that I was a big-time German DJ. "Nein, nein, I don't like de trancey shtuff!"

"My" Irish laddie just dropped the bomb on me that he's married...damn SOB! Several weeks after I met him he actually volunteered the info to me that he was divorced (for cheating, of all things - I shoulda known!), but he sort of neglected to mention the fact that he remarried another woman in Ireland. When he told me and I asked him why he was dishonest to me he said he technically didn't lie because I didn't ASK him specifically if he had remarried...geez, I didn't think I had to! He wanted to know if his being married was a problem since she's there and we're here and I told him that yeah, it was a BIG problem - I absolutely positively do NOT date married men.

Needless to say, he's outta my life. I just hope she catches him someday and gives him the boot. I suppose that's why he does it overseas, though... :(((

I still adore Irish accents, though. ;)

Irish...

Ahhhh, I'm smitten with the Irish...I met an Irish man at a pub here in Oregon about a month ago and now I've completely fallen under the Celtic spell (and that lilting Irish accent!). I always had an affinity for all things Celtic (art, music, mythology, etc) but now I've had a taste of the personal and human side of the Irish. Spontaneous, passionate, humorous, witty with a devil-may-care attitude...I absolutely adore it! He's a bit like Loki in Irish guise, with a slightly mischievious air about him. Physically he's completely opposite of what normally attracts me, but it so doesn't matter now! ;)

Of course, he's not exactly what I call reliable<g> and I still can't tell when he's actually telling or stretching the truth, but for some reason I just can't be mad at him - he's just too damn cute!lol

Why, oh why the weakness?

I used to wonder why I had such a thing for the British and Aussie accents. I have several theories, mostly centered around being raised on Monty Python & Fawlty Towers ( who can resist the man who makes you laugh?). Later in life I had a torrid life-altering mind-altering affair with a guy who'd been raised in Austraila and England, so that helped me along too. But geez, fewer things are more humiliating than making obvious excuses to call for the steward during my last trip to London, just so I could hear him say "Yes, Ma'am, what can I do for you? More water? Cheers!"

*sigh*

Weak. I . Am. Weak.

Anyone have any theories on why the "accent thing" has grown on them?

Is it just me or is this the bad guy you love to hate. From playing the sheriff of nottingham in robin hood:prince of thieves(btw my ALL time favorite movie). To the bad guy in Die Hard 1, to Professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies, there is just something about this man that makes me go...mmmm!

Apologies from your Moderator for my lack of participation over the last few days - the usual August/September quiet period at work has dissipated, and now I keep being asked to do stuff. And that just gets in the way of my tribin'.

So, we've discussed which accents we like, and some of the characteristics of them that make us shiver in delight. But why is it that we like certain accents?

No doubt in same vein, we enjoy certain sights and smells, and I guess touches as well. I believe some of those likes stem from growing up and familiar experiences, whether or not the consciousness is aware of the link. Do you think this could be the same for sounds, voices, and therefore accents?

Personally I have thing for Australian accents on girls. I grew up in my early teens watching 'Neighbors' (class Oz soap opera for those that have fortunately missed it), and had a thing for a couple of the actresses in it (no, one wasn't Kyle). So, I was wondering if that may be the reason that Oz accents can 'do it' for me.

Da Ali G Show?

Does anyone watch Ali G on HBO? The actor does three different accents ( although Ali G commits a lot of grammatical crimes in the midst of speaking with an English accent) There is also Borat and a German fashion reporter.

It is interesting to watch the interaction between him and the americans he talks with- he gets a lot of leeway because of the way he speaks. Somethings are so outrageous that he says. I can only think it's the accent that gets him off the hook. Why is this?

So I was thinking about a fun night out I had in Kansas City a few months ago, and I remembered that I was chatting to a group of American girls who were interested in my accent, except that one would not believe I was guenine. She was of the opinion that I was faking my British accent in an effort to impress them, and ultimately...... whatever ;-)

Her suspicions, it seems, were raised because this wasn't the first time she'd had American men faking accents to impress her.

Which leads on to my question - girls, have you ever found yourself being chatted up by a guy with an 'accent', only to find out later he was faking it....?

Two accent related incidents this week

1. At the DMV on Tuesday I was inline next to a French lady and we had a bit of a conversation starting off on trying to work out where we should be.

Now, in my mind, women speaking with a French accent have a tendency to excite me, and it has occurred when actually being in such a real life situation. On this occasion though, even though she was cute, I had no exciting thoughts/desires/reactions at all, which I realized afterwards, and considered odd.

Maybe it was being at the DMV that did it. But I passed my written test, so whoohoo :-)

2. Was purchasing a honey and ham Quiznos on a small white thing for lunch one afternoon, and the lady I didn't recognize who took my cash decided to tell me my accent was cute. Fantastic, except I couldn't reciprocate the feelings, accent/looks/anything wise.

The hunt continues =)
